Farewell, Gianfranco Sanguinetti (1948-2025)

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gianfranco Sanguinetti, which occured on October 3. He was 77 years old. The news were shared on his website, with the following press release (translation into English is mine):

Gianfranco Sanguinetti, a writer and major figure of the Situationist International, who denounced state terrorism, the crisis of capitalism, and the emergence of “Western despotism” from the 1970s onward, died in Prague on October 3, 2025, at the age of seventy-seven.

He was born in Pully, Switzerland, on July 16, 1948, to Teresa Mattei, a member of the French Resistance and politician, and Bruno Sanguinetti, a member of the French Resistance and industrialist.

From his youth, he was active in the avant-garde and rebel movements that, from the mid-1960s onward, shook Europe and the world at large. A member of the Situationist International, he founded its Italian section in 1969. Three years later, with Guy Debord, he affirmed the need to move beyond this period by co-signing the dissolution of the organization (The True Split in the International).

A connoisseur of the letters and thought of the Ancients, he used them as a powerful tool for interpreting contemporary reality with a sharp and relentless critique, lifting the veil that concealed the truth of things and highlighting the subversions carried out by the established powers.

In 1975, under the pseudonym Censor, he wrote and published the Rapporto veridico sulle ultime possibilità di salvare il capitalismo in Italia. It was a resounding hoax that kept politicians, authorities, security services, and the press busy for months, all of whom were committed to discovering the identity of the author of this cynical and merciless political-economic diagnosis, hailed as the work of a great right-wing operative.

He later revealed his identity in Proofs of the Inexistence of Censor Stated by its Author (1976), explaining the subversive intentions of this Report, revealing unspeakable truths.

He continued his work of demystification with On Terrorism and the State (1979), in which he was the first to expose the use of “false flag” terrorism by states—first and foremost the Italian state at the time—and their apparatuses.

He was responsible for the publication of Leopardi’s work in France.

During the years of his voluntary “exile” in Prague, Gianfranco Sanguinetti, while enriching his vast personal library, amassed a significant collection of erotic art. He also continued to write and publish on art, thought, and international political dynamics, always keeping a keen eye on what dominant propaganda strives to conceal, and denouncing the orchestration of appearances as well as the forms of contemporary authoritarianism, which he called “Western despotism.”

His archives are housed at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. A dedicated website https://www.gianfrancosanguinetti.com/ offers a complete biography and photos.

Series of 5 letters from Alice Becker-Ho to Francoise Zylberberg, between February 14 and April 6, 1973.

Francoise ZYLBERBERG (1944-2010) was a close collaborator of Rene Vienet and a friend of Debord and Becker-Ho. She is first mentioned by Guy Debord in a letter sent to Gianfranco Sanguinetti from Lisbon on 13 May 1973: “François [Zylberberg] et Raspaud, au moins, avaient écrit il y a plus de trois semaines” (Correspondance Vol.5, p. 53) – nearly a month after the letters reproduced below. On 15 November 1973, she had already fallen out of favor, seemingly due to her ties to René Viénet: “Francoise [Zylberberg] apparaissant de plus comme la dernière compagne du misérable Vient, on préfère ne plus la voir (Viénet pensait manifestement se servir d’elle pour nous approcher de nouveau, ou au moins pour laisser entendre qu’il n’est pas sans relation indirecte avec nous)” (Correspondance Vol.5, p.106). She is last mentioned in a letter to Jacques Le Glou dated 9 [December] 1973: “[Viénet] n’impressione donc qu’une ou deux Zyl[berberg], lesquelles d’ailleurs ne sont même pas convaincues, mais assez pauvres – a tous les sens du terme – pour préférer la misère au néant” (Correspondance Vol. 4, p. 217-218). Later on, in 1979, Zylberberg traveled to Taiwan as an exchange scholar, teaching at the National Taiwan University’s Department of Foreign Languages. She would ultimately settle and become a citizen of that country. Zylberberg went on to open Taiwan’s only French-language bookstore in 1999. She passed away in 2010, at the age of 65.

Letter from Florence in which Alice-Becker Ho asks Francoise Zyllerberg to visit her and Guy in Florence towards the end of the month of February. She also asks Zyllerberg to bring funds across the border: “Est-ce qu’il te sera possible de venir ici quelques jours autour de la fin du mois (avant ou après). Si tu me confirmes que oui, je t’enverrai un chèque pour que tu apportes ici la dose d’argent qu’on peut passer à chaque voyage ; et qui nous sera bien utile ?” (p.1). Debord and Becker’s Ho address in Florence follows.

Letter from Florence in which Alice Becker-Ho includes a check for 5,000 Francs, 3,500 of which should be changed to Lira and 1,000 brought in as French Francs. The balance (500 Francs) ought to be used by Zyllerberg to buy herself a roundtrip ticket. Finally, Becker-Ho asks her friend to bring cheese from Paris as well as French cigarettes: ” 2 camemberts Lanquetot (label rouge) pas trop faits (chez le crémier rue St Martin au coin de la rue Rambuteau), et aussi une cartouche de gauloises”. The letter is signed both “Alice” and “Guy” [Debord].

Letter from Florence in which Alice-Becker Ho alludes to the many experiences she and Guy have with younger women: Les filles se succèdent et ne se ressemblent pas. Les Canadiennes, si braves finalement, sont parties pour la Grèce […] Une théâtreuse de passage à Florence avec sa troupe pour une pièce de Brecht qui a laissé sa bague en souvenir. Enfin, Connie, qui occupe la petite chambre et qui reproduit ici, le drame de Milan dont tu as entendu parler à ton arrivée. Quant à la Signorina, on a appris avec l’effroi que tu imagines qu’elle approche des 70 ans! Elle veut me présenter à son amie américaine — je commence à m’inquiéter : quel âge peut-elle avoir, et surtout, dans quel état ? De Céleste — rien. Voilà tous les potins de Florence…”

Letter from Florence in which Alice Becker-Ho discusses renovations of Zylberberg’s apartment in Paris, located 4 rue Cherubini in the 2nd arrondissement: “Les petits carreaux de Miron c’est très joli, sauf à mon avis dans les chiottes – manque plus qu’un crucifix au bout de la chaine et on pourrait faire un tableau surréaliste tardif”. She also provides updates about the new cast of young women that Alice, Guy, and Gianfranco [Sanguinetti] are seeing: “Connie a quitté Florence, encadrée par les flics qu’elle avait appelés à son secours contre G[ianfranco] S[anguinetti] qui lui foutait une trempe pour une dernière saloperie digne de la pire des putains”. The letter is signed both “Alice” and “Guy” [Debord].

A reader kindly informs us:

“The trio of photos of Guy and Alice and, as you identify, Francoise Zylberberg, are all from Gianfranco Sanguinetti’s archive at the Beinecke Library, and were all taken in Florence in 1972. The first is taken inside a trattoria in San Frediano, and in the one on the bridge Gianfranco says the woman in the shawl is Connie. The bridge is the Ponte Santa Trinita which leads into the Oltrano in a fairly straight line to the via delle Caldaie, and is the bridge Celeste would cross each night as mentioned in Panegyric“

These photographs were found amidst a small set of letters and postcards mailed by Debord & Becker-Ho to Francoise Zylberberg from Florence. Therefore, it is possible (though not confirmed), these photographs (aside from Becker’s baby picture) were taken there. As usual, any insights from our readers are most welcome

“1962, while living in Paris, Dutch painter, sculptor and editor of The Situationist Times Jacqueline de Jong (born 1939) completed a set of 11 woodcut engravings, a medium in which she rarely worked. Danish painter and writer Asger Jorn (1914–1973) adored the engravings and decided to publish them. First, however, Jorn decided to compose a set of texts to accompany the art work, turning the suite of engravings into an “erotic novel” which they called “The Case of the Ascetic Satyr.” Over the course of the next decade they jotted down playful (and occasionally sexually explicit) notes to each other on anything that came to hand–exhibition flyers, cocktail napkins, even an unused sheet from Memoires, Jorn’s famous collaborative artist’s book with Guy Debord. The texts are mostly in English, the language Jorn and de Jong usually used together, though some are in French, Danish, Dutch or German. Wordplay is prevalent, sometimes referring to James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. In the end, the book project outlasted the relationship between the two artists, and so was never published. This beautifully produced artist’s book–published in a signed and numbered edition of 200 copies–is thus not so much a facsimile as a true first edition, with the prints accompanied by replicas of the notes between the two lovers. A companion volume includes essays on the piece by leading art historians in the field, Kevin Repp, Marc Lenot, Roberto Ohrt, Karen Kurczynski and Axel Heil” (DAP)

A spectacular account of the nearly two-decade long relationship between two important artists and members of the Situationist movement.

Printed in 334 copies: 200 signed and numbered copies, 100 signed H.C. copies, and 34 deluxe copies that include an original etching by Jacqueline de Jong from “La folie endormie” (1961), signed and numbered. Ours is copy #30. While the regular edition remains available (see https://www.artbook.com/9781938922862.html if interested), the deluxe edition is sold out and not available in the trade.

INTERNATIONALE SITUATIONNISTE. Ein kultureller Putsch während Ihr schlaft! n.p. [Munich, Germany]: n.p. [Internationale Situationniste], n.d. [21 April 1959]. Leaflet; 21 x 15 cm.; black ink on pink stock.

Leaflet signed by members of different sections of the Situationist International – Constant for Holland, Debord for France, Jorn for Denmark, Pinot-Gallizio for Italy, Wyckaert for Belgium, and Zimmer for Germany – as a closing statement for the third SI conference. It was distributed in the streets of Munchen on April 21, 1959.

More details are given in Potlatch 30 (15 July 1959):”THE SITUATIONISTS held their Third International Conference in Munich from 17 to 20 April 1959, fifteen months after the Second Conference (Paris, January 1958). Six sections of the SI (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands) were represented by Armando, Constant, Debord, Eisch, Gallizio, Höfl, Jorn, Melanotte, Oudejans, Prem, Stadler, Sturm, Wyckaert and Zimmer. The conference debated as many questions posed from a theoretical perspective as it did from the prespective of tactics for the survival of the situationist movement through its extension. An eleven-point declaration was adopted unanimously as a proclamation of the minimum requirements of situationist action: a project, which was hardly modified in a long discussion of each point, previously appearing in the second issue of our journal, Internationale Situationniste [The Amsterdam Declaration]. It was decided that the German version of this journal be launched in the Autumn. INTERNATIONALE LETTRISTE. Deutschland über alles. Paris: Groupe Francais de l’Internationale Lettriste, n.d. [26 Nov. 1954]. 1p. leaflet, 11 x 32 cm.

Leaflet protesting the arrest of members of the Swiss section of the Internationale Lettriste (Maurice Crausaz, Gida Croeti, Jean-Pierre Lecoultre, Pierre-Henri Liardon, Claude Recordon, Juliette Zeller, Marcel Zbinden). On November 1954, in the town of Neuchatel, the Internationale Lettriste gave a conference where they handed off a leaflet reproducing Sade’s famed quote: “L’idée de Dieu est, je l’avoue, le seul tort que je ne puisse pardonner à l’homme” (Trans: “The very notion of God, I must confess, is the only wrong I am unable to forgive man.”). This led to a brawl, where two pastors got beaten up by the lettrists. The Swiss Police later declared the Swiss section of the Internationale Lettriste “illegal and revolutionary”, banning the circulation of its journal (Phosphore) as well that of Potlatch.

The Swiss section of the Internationale Lettriste was short-lived, and little is known about it. Its creation is announced in Potlatch 13 (dated 23 Oct. 1954):

“A l’issue des conversations engagées récemment à Paris, un Groupe Suisse de l’Internationale lettriste a été formé le 20 octobre. Adresse: Charles-Emile Mérinat, Floréal 3. Lauzanne (Vaud) Suisse” (p.1)) (Trans: “Following recent discussions in Paris, a Swiss Group of the Lettrist International was formed on October 20. Address: Charles-Emile Mérinat, Floréal 3, Lauzanne (Vaud), Switzerland”).

However, the group’s dissolution – which occured on December 7 – is announced in Potlatch 15 (22 Dec. 1954):

“Les lettristes suisses qui s’étaient manifestés en octobre et novembre dans leur pays doivent être considérés comme de purs et simples provocateurs. Notre rupture avec eux a fait l’objet d’une note en date du 7 décembre diffusée à l’intérieur de l’Internationale lettriste, et auprès de quelques amis étrangers. Nous rappelons à ce propos que le recours à des violences personnelles est imbécile, et que nous ne doutons pas d’un règlement plus général des conflits où nous nous trouvons impliqués.” (p3.) (Trans: “The Swiss Lettrists who were active in their country in October and November must be considered as pure and simple provocateurs. Our break with them was the subject of a note dated December 7, circulated within the Lettrist International, and among some foreign friends. We would like to remind on this occasion that the use of personal violence is stupid, and that we have no doubt about a more general settlement of conflicts in which we find ourselves involved.” (p.3).

The reason given for the break is particularly interesting, as it directly contradicts the statement of support made only 2 weeks before in Deutschland über alles.

As far as we are aware, no physical trace of the Swiss section remains to this date; we welcome any information from our readers that would point us in the direction of any relevant material

This scarce leaflet is reproduced in Acquaviva ((Lettrist Corpus: Ephemera 1946-2023) -p. 37), in Oeuvres (p.170), and in Scheppe & Ohrt (p.125, #140). It is accounted for by Gonzalvez (p.101-102). OCLC doesn;t locate any copy but we know of 2: One at Yale (Wolman’s papers), the other at the Getty. It is missing from the Debord archives at the French National Library in Paris.

Chtcheglov’s original resignation letter & accompanying explanatory leaflet [June 1954]

This is Gilles Ivain (Ivan Chtcheglov’s) original resignation letter from the Internationale Lettriste, hand signed by its author. The letter is addressed to Mohamed Dahou, who was then editor-in-chief of the epnymous periodical Internationale Lettriste. While the resignation occurred just one day before the publication of the first issue of Potlatch (released June 22), it was announced in the second issue — where it was presented as an exclusion (released June 29). The reasons given were “Mythomanie, délire d’interprétation –manque de conscience révolutionnaire” (Mythomania, interpretative delirium, lack of revolutionary consciousness).

So where does the truth lie? In Ivan Chtcheglov: Profil perdu (Paris: Allia, 2006), scholars Jean-Marie Apostolides and Borris Donné explain that, while there had been growing tension between Debord and Chtcheglov, it was Chtcheglov who walked away. On the occasion of Avant la Guerre, the first exhibition of Internationale Lettriste that opened on June 11, 1954 (see https://situationnisteblog.com/2021/10/06/avant-la-guerre-66-metagraphies-influentielles-1954/), a promotional leaflet was produced. Against Chtcheglov’s wish, Debord had featured the heavily political slogan “Ce qui nous importe, c’est la prise du pouvoir” (what matters to us is taking power). A few days later, in the backroom of the bar Tonneau d’Or, Chtcheglov claims that, following an argument with Debord, he simply left the group.

Small typed leaflet penned by Gilles Ivain that announces what he describes as a split in the Lettrist group: “Je juge l’actuel comportement lettriste de Conord comme vicieux, conséquence de son refoulement et de ses ancielUles humiliations. Comment adopter le parti de l’Internationale? Mon choix a toujours été fait sur les individus en bonne santé. La vieille histoire des CORPS ne manquera pas de revenir hanter André-Frank. L’Internationale lettriste n’est plus par moments pour Guy Debord qu’un moyen de supprimer ce sur quoi il ne “règne” pas. La Terreur ne peut rien contre la médecine. La gnose se vit plus qu’elle ne s’explique. Les procès seront mythologiques ou ne seront pas…” (p.1). The leaflet was mailed to members of the Lettrist International. It is reproduced in Ivan Chtcheglov: Profil perdu, p.68. We locate no OCLC copies.

Together, the resignation letter and leaflet give credence to Chtcheglov’s claim that he resigned from the Lettrist International, against Debord’s narrative (and official historiography) of an exclusion. As such, these are rare and important mementos of pre-Situationist History.

Announcing the Situationist International Research Network (SIRN)

After a long hiatus — my books have finally come out of their boxes, as we finalized our move — I am happy to be posting again on this blog.

I would like to take the opportunity to share the birth of the Situationist International Research Network (SIRN) https://www.situationistresearch.net/. For the first time, a centralized resource is now available for scholars to connect around their shared interest in the SI and related movements.

SIRN defines itself as “a network of academics and independent researchers working on the Situationist International and related topics. It seeks to provide news, information, contacts and other resources for people interested in undertaking or engaging with peer-reviewed research on the Situationists. Our goal is to facilitate international, interdisciplinary and multilingual collaboration between researchers and to promote peer-reviewed academic research on the Situationists to a wider audience”

SIRN is led by Dr. Alastair Hemmens, with Prof. Gabriel Zacarias as Deputy Director. The two scholars most recently co-authored he Situationist International: A Critical Handbook (London: Pluto Press, 2020). Members hail from a range of academic fields, including Philosophy & Aesthetics, Literature, Art History, History, Sociology.. They include Tom Bunyard, Francois Coadou, Bertrand Cochard, Patrick Marcolini, Sophie Dolto, Fabrice Flahutez, Amy Grandvoinet, Eric-John Russell, Vanessa Theodoropoulou, Anna Trespeuch-Berthelot…

SEGURA, Alain. A Season with Marianne: The Last Surrealist. Trans. Bill Brown. Brooklyn: Common Notions, Dec. 2024

We are excited to announce the translation of Une saison avec Marianne, to be released in December 2024 by Common Notions (who also published our book a few years ago). Best remembered as the author of the iconic May’68 leaflet Nous ne sommes rien soyons tout (trans: We are nothing, we shall be everything), little else was previously known about the “Yugoslav comrade”.

A member of Breton’s surrealist, a friend of Debord (who dubbed her “the last surrealist”), Marianne Ivsic was at the heart of the artistic and political turmoil of late 1960s Paris. In this fascinating memoir, Alain Segura remembers his encounters with Ivsic, shedding light on a life full of love, passion, creativity, and militancy. An important and most welcome contribution to the history of May 1968, Surrealism, and the Situationist International

Goodbye, Jacqueline de Jong (1939-2024)

Jacqueline de Jong passed away on June 29, 2024 in Amsterdam. There is little to say now as we digest the sad news. I still remember our encounters in New York and Amsterdam; her energy and passion were infectious. Thinking of the life she lived, these were indeed Situationist Times.

Like many others, I will miss her.
